For a birthday present I've been given a years supply of 'Gardener's World' along a complementary pair of Felco 4's. I've always found it very good reading with plenty of detail. In this months edition Sarah Raven has written a nice but worrying article on the declining insect population. I'm sure you're already aware and planting good pollinators as opposed to geraniums, Busy Lizzies and so on. Again you'll already know about her new series on BBC TV starting on Oct 5, I'll certainly be watching. 'Bees, Butterflies & Blooms'

I don't like that magazine, because it is all used in the GW programme on television. That is just a case in point.

I have it on a gift subscription too Merlin I always enjoy AT's comments on the last page and Adam Pascoe's 'What to do Now' section. Although, as Cherry says, some of it repeats the TV programme, there are a lot of additional articles too.

I'll be watching (or probably recording) that programme too Merlin, I do try & remember to plant 'single' flowers for the insects rather than the fancier doubles but although I suppose 'native' plants are best I think our insects have adapted to lots of the more exotic imports we have in our gardens nowadays too.

SR's article is GW interesting and informative as is on TV, though obviously it doesn't apeal to everyone. My subscription came about after I complained about the poor content in the others I used to get. So, Penny bought me GW in in which there was an article on Roses, it was excellent. My praise led to her parents giving me the year's subscription, an excellent B'day gift. This forum is where I learn about gardening, mags too but I have to be boring (again) and say that most of what I've learnt is form GQT, again it's not everyone's cup of tea, and difficult in a 'family' situation. I agree Sue in that insects do adapt, but if you can believe the figures we really need to do all we possibly can. I attended a meeting last night in the village about where to build Mr Cameron's new housing. Though there was consensus, I couldn't help but wonder whether we're shooting ourselves in the foot and should be building more insect homes !!
