I didn't know they acted like weeds. They must like your garden Merlin. Mine is a double hollyhock which looks like a double purple peony. I have never seen one like it. It is the first I have grown and there is no rust. I think the seeds came from the seed swap. Although we grow them as biennials, they are really perennials.

I'd agree, Cherry. I inherited some which flowered every year until they died in the last winter.

What a surprise. There is a white snowy looking double hollyhock out now. These are really nice. I only every saw them as scabby looking tall things before. This is flowering at a sensible height.

The rust appears on the leaves every year. Those new Alcathaeas haven't developed any at all.

It's been a good year for 'rust' this year...I mean very little.

You've been lucky then, Merlin. Peony, at the moment there are only three different Alcalthaeas, so the choice of colours is limited. I'm sure that more will become available though. I shall be watching out for them!

I bought plants on-line, Peony. I'll try to find the despatch note and let you know where I got them. I know Beth Chatto sells one of them - but obviously it's cheaper to get all three from the same Nursery.

They are big plants with big roots Peony, and the colours vary a lot. May I suggest you buy seed and prick out into something like empty rose pots. They will flower allbeit small but you'll get to see what colour they are.
