A lady who I know has a row of about 20 dahlias in her garden and she has lost 5 of them and she asked my advice. She said that the leaves started going brown and then it reached the stems and eventually the plants died.I asked her what size they were before the trouble begun and she said they had reached flowering size.I also asked her if the dying plants were together in the row and she said they weren,t. In all the years I have grown dahlias I have never had anything like this. The only thing I can suggest is slugs chewing round the base of the plants .If this happened it would stop the plants taking up water. However if slugs were responsible I would have expected them to get them soon after planting.Another thought though is that we have had more wet weather recently than in June after planting and this is what slugs like. If any of you have any other ideas please let me know.

The only thing i can think off is sclerotinia rot, but that starts at the base of the plant, can occur in cool damp summers or when soil is earthed up against the dahlia stems. But i am by no means certain that is what it is mate.
