With last winter in mind, what precautions have you made? Today I'm going to make sure my independent oil stove (no electric needed) is in order and work out if I've plenty of oil.

I've been putting my fuchsias and pelargoniums ready for winter sooner than I usually do, and I've disconnected the water from the bottom shed, which will be a nuisance, but I don't want any more burst pipes. I do hope we get a mild winter. I feel all right in the rain, but cold weather , frost and snow depress me I am also going to cover some garden plants with old pots to give them some protection, but that will be later on

Steve that is not the answer. I am not being as optimistic as I have been in the past. Good tips there Hywel.

I've potted up my Polygala and that's in the greenhouse. I have fleece and bell cloches ready, and I'm going to mulch over the rootballs of any 'vulnerable' plants. I might also pot up Salvia 'Amistad' as that was new in September. I have fan heaters in both greenhouses, so I'll be plugging them in and checking the temperatures soon.

I have tons of fleece and i am going to be putting extra compost all over my beds, all the plants are new in this year so am taking extra precautions, i may ask one of the farmers for some straw too.

I have plenty of fleece and as soon as it rains and I can get the canes in the ground I shall make a wigman shape around a few of the vulnerable plants and if it gets really cold I'll wrap fleece round the canes and attach with clothes pegs. I've used this method before and it works well. I'm also going to add extra mulch on the beds this year. I haven't got any heat for my greenhouse but because it is a 'lean to', ie one side is the brick wall of OH's workshop, also I've put up bubblewrap and it is in a sheltered position and everything in it survived last year, I hoping it will be OK.
I shall do the same as Geranium and pot up my new Salvia and keep it in the greenhouse and replant next year.

Steve that is not the answer. I am not being as optimistic as I have been in the past. Good tips there Hywel. About as good as trying to second guess Mother Nature! I will do same as last year bubble wrapping and hessian etc, sadly for some last year it wasn't quiet enough

This year only plants in greenhouse will be my terracotta lavendars and roses as keeping them in greenhouse protects from frost.
Worked ok last year.
All my fuchsias and geraniums are all protected now .
Fuchsias buried in deep trench ,fuchsias and geraniums are in a box in loft.
Rest in my conservatory.
And new windows and doors so we are all sorted and nice and cosy.

It seems such a shame to 'put away' my Fuchsias as they are flowering their socks off at the moment, I don't have GH heating (too mean) but if I did I'd have 'back-up) as we get power cuts here. I'll use lots of straw and maybe turn some pots on their side later. Stuff I'm not sure of I'll put against a west facing wall and smother with straw.

I just brought some of that tubular polystyrene pipe lagging home from work....fits perfectly over the stem of a standard fuchsia

That is a good tip, but you are only a moderator and would not know that this would be useful in the tips thread. ;D
