We have 2 fat ball hangers dangling from a tree in the garden, I've tied a bird feeder cake to an oven near to the back door and I've started scattering some loose wild bird feed on the snow with a bit of bread. They can make their own nut sandwiches. I like watching them peak away feeding themselves but I don't want them to become reliant on the loose bird food and I don't to attract mice. Some snow has melted but it is quite thick still and it has started snowing again. Not a lot yet but there is talk of more on Friday. So I am not going to cut back yet but I do worry that they will become reliant on me.

You'll have to keep feeding them now Moonlight at least until everywhere thaws or they'll be tapping on the windows demanding their breakfast!

There is a massive problem with this, the birds are moving too fast and I don't recognise which they are, so I start looking them up and then they zoom off. Current official family bird spotter thinks that the 4 small brown coloured birds are robins in a tree.
Lots of bird action but they go so fast, I think that they are having a laugh at us.
Currently we have seen lots of birds but hand on heart, the only multiple that I can say we saw were 2 magpies.

Magpies are hard to mistake for anything else Moonlight so I think you're pretty safe on that one! ;D I'm not sure about the 4 small birds being robins though as you rarely see 4 together unless they're fighting each other, they're very territorial & you usually only see the one male & possibly his mate (female I mean, not his best buddy! ;D) in the garden at the same time.

I have to disagree with the normal advice about the robins. I have six which come at once, four of them every day. Our visiting friends are surprised at this.

Maybe they're not so territorial in your garden because it's large, I've never seen more than one at a time in mine but then our garden is the size of a postage stamp! ;D

Not really Sue. Four of them are fine, but six has them jumping up and down.
Good news. Four goldfinches came for the niger seed yesterday after an absence of weeks. I think they were somewhere else and I have quite a lot of the seed which was just being thrown around by the blue tits.

When feeding the birds this afternoon I was wearing my old PO fluorescent jacket. I think they are a bit wary of the colour as they wait until I have gone before coming down as usual.

Finally got one of the jackdaws to eat out of my hand. it is still rather wary and as soon as he has taken a seed he backs off a bit. They do seem to be getting rather tame now. Probably just cupboard love

They are very cheeky aren't they jackdaws. When we go to Llandudno up on Great Orme there are always a few who will fly over to the car door when you park & wait to see if you've brought a picnic! ;D

When we go to Llandudno up on Great Orme there are always a few who will fly over to the car door when you park & wait to see if you've brought a picnic! ;D One place I worked I used to sit in the garage when having my coffee and biscuit and almost always had a robin for company to share with the crumbs. As a youngster I had a pet jackdaw and (at different times) a magpie. Both were rescued birds and were very tame even sitting on my shoulder like a parrot.
