Was woken up at 3.30am this morning by a noisy Tawny Owl, must have been in the ash tree at the end of our garden. Its calls were really loud and after about 5 calls I could faintly hear another owl calling in reply. I have heard them at this time of year before so I think they must be checking to see whether there are other owls in the neighbourhood.

I would love to see a tawny owl around here peony - but perhaps not be woken up at 3.30am by one!

I would love to see a tawny owl around here peony - but perhaps not be woken up at 3.30am by one! I've only seen one once Sue, they are very difficult to spot during the day as they sit so still, but they are beautiful birds.

When the sun was out this morning there were 5 beautiful little goldfinches in the conifer at the end of the garden. I was surprised because as I've mentioned we normally only get 2 at once maybe once or twice 3. They were chattering to each other & picking over all the tiny cones on the tree, it's a 'nuisance leylandii' but is loved by the birds & squirrels & shelters pots, storage & the hedgehog house underneath it. I hadn't noticed how many cones were on it until I looked at the photos, the shots are on zoom as the goldfinches were quite high up. You can see all 5 on here- 4 heads, 1 rear end!

That is very good SueA. There is an odd one here too so that I wonder about its mate. I did not know what they ate, so now I know. They look more natural in your pic. I think you will be pleased because they will increase in numbers. They are more nervous than the other birds and tits.

Lovely pictures Sue I wish we got goldfinches here, but I've only ever seen one last year and it didn't stay long.

You might get more eventually peony , we never used to see them at all but they've increased over the last few years. No goldfinches today but we did get the little gang of tiny birds who go around together, there was a bluetit, coal tit & goldcrest (maybe more but I only saw one of each at any time), they arrive together & leave together, there's usually a great tit as well but not today, none of these will show up when I do the RSPB Birdwatch in a few weeks of course!

The birds I thought were long tailed tits obviously aren't. We have three kinds of tit but not that sort. SueA is that a daphne growing beside the coconut?

I'm not sure Cherry , the plant in front is a euonymus but the variegated one behind it has come over the fence from next door, I don't think it flowers though ( not on my side anyway!), I chopped some of it off to use in my Christmas door wreath!

It is the green plant on the left SueA. There are a lot of buds on it, but if it was a daphne, you wouldn't forget that.

That's the euonymus Cherry , I think the blurry 'buds' you can see are the little pink/orange fruits on it.
