Another thread worth keeping.
I'm going to buy mine today and knew there were some recommendations somewhere
Janbrad
B&Q are selling seed potatoes 2 packs for £6 this week. A sure sign that spring is on the way - yippee!!!

I managed to get a kilo bag of Charlotte of the cheap table at More Reasons, they are from France though.
esther
I have ordered
Kestrel
Marfona
Winston
Lady Christl
Picasso
Charlotte
ANNUALJUNKIE
Well I've only ever sown first earlies, but having more space this year going for seconds and main crop as well. Aran pilot's worked out well last year some more of the same this year, any suggestions as per second and main crop
esther
Marfona is a second early AJ
I like it a lot,too
We had really good results with Picasso last year - A good all rounder and seemed to be pest and disease free - or we were just lucky

Which first earlies do you recommend? My garden is prone to blight, first earlies are the only ones I can grow so they need to be a good all-rounder.
esther
We always get good results with Charlotte WLF I haven't tried Lady Christl before but have heard good reports so am giving it a go this year
tel7772
A fast first early is one called Swift, sowing to cropping about 8 weeks.
Blight usually strikes the main crops, so you should be ok with 2nd earlies, if you like waxy salad potatoes, Nicola and Charlotte are well worth growing.
SueA
I like 'Winston' & 'Lady Christl' to grow in pots & tubs.
Wildlife_friendly
I’ve just looked them up and will try Swift which is slug resistant (another problem I suffer with) and Charlotte which has good blight and scab resistance, they both sound good for my garden.
Janbrad
A fairly new variety called Vale's Emerald did well for me last year. I think there is also a 2nd early called Vale's Sovereign but haven't tried that yet.
Cherry
AJ I like Kerr's Pink which is very old and does suit your climate. I might try a couple of rows, even though the farmer gives me some new potatoes. I love Kerr's Pink, but it could be memory.
Wildlife_friendly
Kerr’s pink is a main crop so they’d be no good for me. You’ll have to let us know if they are as good as you remember.
I never remember to make a note of what I’ve planted. My usual method for choosing a variety is to pick the ones that have sold the most.

This is a very good reason for choosing the way you do WF, unless the store is only dealing with a few including your choice. Kerr's Pink is superseded now, even though I love them. Steve's reason, i.e. looking for slug resistance is another good reason for choosing Desiree.

ANNUALJUNKIE
Yep we buy those alot, generally they are ok.
ANNUALJUNKIE
Bought 'arron pilot' 'maris peers' and 'maris piper' today. Probably have enough room for 2 more varieties so will choose for those mentioned above

West Yorkshire Organic Association, are holding a potato fair, near us on the 18th Feb.
I understand they will have 40 varieties for sale, at 15p a tuber,
I could try all of them for £6.

problem is Tel, one tuber doesn't give you a representative sample. You might get a good one or a bad one.
