You are all lucky you don't live in the tropics, was looking at animal pics you posted here and I realized we don't get any of those nice critters in here. Just the icky ones like this visitor we had who managed to spook our horses. It was quite huge around 4 feet or so, sorry about the picture, the only one I got handy was my cellphone. Hubby went out to check what the commotion at the stables was all about and saw this. We managed to corner it in the patio and we closed the screen door until the Parks and Wildlife people arrived to take it away. Horrible thing, I didn't feel like getting close enough to take more pictures.

It's a monitor lizard, quite common around here but this one was probably the biggest we've seen.

Wow, I think I'd get a fright if I found one of those down the end of the garden! ;D It must be fascinating to see such exotic creatures in the wild but I think I'll stick to squirrels, frogs & toads up close over here!

I don't think I'd like to find one either, they can be pretty evil can't they?

It doesn't look very friendly does it I'm glad to hear you were able to get rid of it without any harm coming to you.

That is pretty horrible. I was brought up watching out for snakes in Australia, but I would not know what to do if one of these was about. Does it attack? Is it fast?

Wow, when I first saw it I thought it would be fantastic to have that wander into my garden, then I Googled it They are active lizards, that may be very hostile, lashing out with their tails upon the slightest provocation. Even a small monitor can produce a stinging lash with its tail.
The claws of monitors are long and sharp. The jaws are very strong. Once they bite something it is very difficult to get them to let go. perhaps it wouldn't be so good ;D

I decided that if I would be doing anything in the garden or I would be wandering around our orchard I would bring one of my hubby's spare air rifles. Don't want to run into another one of those things, Wildlife people told us it's mating season so those monitor lizards are out and about.

Well guys I confess if I was the one who saw that thing in the stables I would have run all the way back to Canada.
