I accept that I'm aesthetically illiterate when it comes to 'art' but I really despair when the media spends so long gawping at the Turner prize. Every year they drool over what I would describe as less than rubbish. And while I'm in a moaning mood, I see that the predictable rise in the cost of the Olympics is again the case. Being also Competitively illiterate I won't be watching any of it but I as a taxpayer will be paying for it.

I have been all over the Olympic venues, looking from the outside, and we were being given figures which just were not true and even the guide knew this. I don't even believe the latest horrendous figures. Why are we meant to be so stupid?

There is a load of pretentious twaddle around the Turner Prize but at least almost everyone in the country has heard of it & knows it's to do with 'art'. I'm not keen on some of the more vague pieces, we did go to see the exhibition of nominees one year when it was at the Tate Liverpool & it was an interesting experience, O.H. thought it was rubbish I thought a couple of the entries were quite clever even though I prefer more traditional painting/sculpture . This year I thought the guy called George Shaw should have won, he was one of the runners up, he paints bleak landscapes of Coventry where he grew up & seems like a down-to-earth guy (probably why he didn't win!) Here's a link to a video of him & his work, (loud advert at the beginning of it! ) www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2011/may/04/turner-prize-shortlist-2011-announced

My OH has just this week finished her latest painting. I think it is very good but being a Philistine I am not competent to judge Will take a pic of it when I get the time and post it here for your comments, good, bad or indifferent. She is still learning so any constructive criticism may be a good thing.

I have a philosophy about the Turner prize and all other forms of ‘art’ in the same ilk. All this ‘art’ is put on a pedestal by people who know diddly squat about art, if Lucinda, who is married to Lord wotsit says ‘it is so expressive’ then all the sheep, not wanting to appear stupid, follow suit, before you know it you have a pile of rubbish which has been talked up to winning the Turner prize.
It is a shame more people don’t have the intelligence and backbone to stand up and say ‘that is pants’.

Your O.H.'s painting is lovely Sweetpea, gives you a warm glow! Did she paint it from her imagination or from a photograph or view? I'm rubbish at painting from my imagination but but enjoy using photos I've taken to work from.
