hi Floydie, just saw this post. For what its worth I would let the kids have the run of the garden to begin with then as you get the time develop an area for what you want it for. Many people use potatoes as a first crop as they will grow quite well and also help with clearing weeds plus you get something to eat at the end of the season. After the cultivations with the spuds the ground will be in good nick for other uses. Get the kids involved if you can. If they have helped they will be more inclined to look after whatever it is. Main thing is not to rush and just do what you can as and when and the garden will evolve of its own accord. My previous gardens were a kids playground, my OHs drying area for the washing, the guinea pigs runs and from a small area growing veg I got eventually to growing stuff for show and a patio and two lawns plus a g/house and 20' polytunnel. It took a few years of my life unlike these garden makeover jobs done in a day. When you get the chance just enjoy sitting out there and dreaming of what you want to do and one day you will realise it has happened. Good luck.

Thanks for that sweetpea it will indeed take aloooong time to get it just how i want it we will do one bed at a time i think. I used to grow spuds at my old house in large tubs and will be doing the same here for now along with a few beens maybe carrots ect, i also grew pumpkins with the children and have some dills seeds (we will see how they fair lol) ive also sown some peppers, and have some chilli seeds (to also grow in tubs). The veggy patch will develop over time and as above would be better for spuds this year, oh i also have butternut squash and marrow seeds. (i hope i can grow something along the spuds tho ).

Something annual or not expensive for this year, it will give lots of colour while you plan/create. I see you're sowing Peppers, do you have a GH?

It would be a good idea to see what is available and perhaps check out prostate cotoneasters and Sarcococcas which are available as small flowering plants. A fern may take your fancy. Best of all, there could be bargains available. These are plants you can keep and they are very hardy.

Those are Cotoneaster horizontalis Floydie. It is a useful plant, best grown from seed which is stratified. You might find little seedlings around the established plants.

I'll have to look when i tidy the front. They are growing on the floor (between the slabs) but ive been told they should be grown up the fence/wall.

Ok thanks I'll have a word with the store holder . Ive sown them inside they are in my airing cupboard for now so they germinate :-) I'll then move them to my window sill until is warm enough to put them outside . Check them every day floydie as they can germinate and be drawn up so that they are then virtually useless. I confess to being caught out more than once over the years with sowings in the airing cupboard.

Ive been keeping an eye on them but i know what you mean. No signs of germination as of last night. The heat should be building in there as ive had the fire on since 9am (its freezing here today). Hopefully wont be long :-).
