Is there a cure, every year I battle with myself, my natural reluctance to be sociable, friendly and spend a small fortune on Christmas cards is under enormous pressure to be nice, kind and considerate. In the good old says I got it down to 6 cards and 3 of them were overseas. Today I've just posted over a dozen, well actually I delivered 4. Would I be so far out if I said that most folk only send one cos they sent one?!!! One delivery was to a Lady down the lane, I knocked at the door and an upstairs window opened, I looked up and waving a card I said, " I'll give you one if you give me one" The ensuing misunderstanding was soon settled and I ended up with a card and a mince pie. What do you write, especially when you don't REALLY know them, and in this 'modern' society who's name do you put on the envelope, often a surname is only half right! Barrrr Humbug !!!! can't wait until it's all over and I can be miserable again

I am OK about sending cards and I really enjoy getting them. It is one expense which I don't mind. I am proud of myself this year, because I have managed to send them second class at a great saving. We have a lot of cards because we are in different 'clubs' - masonic lodge, 6AEF, WI, church, past neighbours and rellies. Some of these people are only in touch once a year because of distance and I love to hear from them. I am not too keen on typewritten news unless that person has to do this. I like a few lines on the Christmas card. This is one part of Christmas I really enjoy but you don't have to send me one Merlin. Louise has started a nice thread where you can wish me a Merry Christmas.

I’m not a great card sender. I grew up in a non-card family, we never gave birthday or Christmas cards so I’ve never considered them important, however, I have friends who consider cards very important so I struggle with the should I, shouldn’t I each year.
What we need to do Merlin is give one card with a little note on the bottom saying “Please keep and bring out again next year” so we wouldn’t have this dilemma again. ;D

I like to send and receive Xmas cards. Sometimes I get cards from people from my past whom I barely remember but it helps to bridge the years. One of my brothers in Oz sends his annual poem cataloguing the events of the past year in Australia, UK and the world at large. He's been doing it now for over 20 years. I used to save them but lost loads when we moved home. If I can find time I may put this year's on here. have got it but not read it yet.

That's nice SP, have you ever reciprocated with a poem? WF, your idea reminds me of a friend who has a life-long friend, they've sent the same card back and to for years. Both widowers now but keep in touch in the modern way. I've tried sending very small cards but I still get big ones in return, it's psychological warfare. Some even write their address in big letters on the back of the card! My theory is, if I can't think of anything more to say . than Happy Christmas And a Happy New year I tend not to bother. I have about 1,459, 458, 1/2 friends on Facebook cos I don't know how to 'delete'! I heard of someone who licked so many stamps that she had to have a lump lanced from her tongue, it turned out to be a cockroach. Apparently the store where the stamps.envelopes were kept was infested with them. Just as well I'm so unpopular as my OH gets so many cards there'd be no room for mine! It took her an hour the other night to write cards! even I got an expensive sloppy one. I did of cause say "and the same to you" I'm fortunate in that her Birthday falls on Christmas so I need only send (well give, saves a stamp) her one card.

Interesting ways of looking at the sending of cards. We are all different and I can see the merit in every story because we are all gardeners and good people. (I have some bad bits.)

We send quite a few cards. However, there's one couple that used to be colleagues of mine way back in the 70s. I haven't seen them since I left that place of work, but we always exchange cards. They would be over 80 yrs old now, and every year I wonder if they are still alive. So I wait until I receive their card, and then I send one back ;D My parents (mother really, because she was a very sociable lady) used to send and recieve over 100 cards. It was my job every year, right up until she died, to check all the addresses. ;D I find today's Christmases are 'in your face' and it irritates and annoyes my. I don't like having to 'enjoy' myself in other people's ways, in other people's time, just because they do. And although we enjoy it in our own way, I won't be sorry to see it over and done with. Nadolig Llawen / Merry Christmas to you all ;D

I think they're a waste of money The e-cards are now a far more cost effective way to go, it wouldn't offend or bother me if i never received a xmas (or birthday) card again. That makes me sound like i'm a miserable b***er but i'm not, i'm just super aware of the wastage (and costs) involved.

If you cards have to be posted, it might be easier to give this year a miss Floydie. I have had to do this in the past.

I was hearing about people (women) who would phone their cat while they were out so the cat could hear their voice when the answering machine kicked in Wonder what they would do if the cat rang back ;D

When I go out without Barnaby I always leave Radio 4 on for him.
