I always left the radio on until the kitchen one had smoke coming out of it and had an electrical smell. It was still under guarantee. Now I don't leave it on.

The lights affect the dogs. They know it is sleep time if the lights are out. If I go back into the kitchen, even after only five minutes of lights out, they don't stir, because they regard it then as their bed room and I am an intruder.
