Everything tied up now and most disbudded. Drop of rain forecast tomorrow and for the rest of the week, so covers will go up in the next few days. As I'm into movies at the moment here's a couple, with a bit of audio commentary too Just click on the photos. Now I don't mind a bit of rain for next week, but it would be nice if it could stop and be dry the week after Looks like I will have enough smalls and mediums to complete my entries, but the giants will struggle. Could do with that extra week.

Great videos Scrumpy thanks.
Mine are still really slow to grow - I do have some buds, not many though. Can I ask please for some advice on poms relating to the calex. When should this be removed?
Thanks.

When should this be removed? Thanks. I take mine off when the buds are showing colour, i do not know if there is a fixed rule, when they should be taken off.

Thanks Tel, is it just a case of carefully pulling them off?

Thanks Tel, is it just a case of carefully pulling them off? I just nip them off with the thumb nail, leaving a little bit on will not stop them forming the golf ball shape. I would rather leave a little on rather than trying to remove it all, otherwise there is a danger off damaging the stem of the bloom.

Covers now up. I left them off last night even though rain was due today to see how some of the mediums coped with the downpour. The smalls out the front are open to the climate so this year will be a good test for them. So far, Barbarry Melody and possibly Gilwood Terry G have coped OK. Friday and Saturday look like being the worst days as wind and heavy rain are forecast, which of course is what dahlias love

My Sir Alfs have not got a single bud yet, they were d/stoped on 25 june. Looks like they are affected by the lack of sun more than anything else. Poms have picked up. One minute its total despondency, the next, hope!! I have very nearly gone into the garden with my strimmer. Is dahlia growing allways like this!!!! Its my second year of growing them seriously.(The 2 worst seasons for a long time??)

Just looked at my 2010 records, Sir Alfs on a single stp 67days average, from stop to flower. I think I'm going to have 2 timings next year (allow for a very slow season) rather than aiming for different shows.
