To get off to an early start, last December I sowed 8 SP's in toilet rolls that I made square and placed them in a sheltered spot. They look D E D What a sad little tale.

Well it wont have been the cold merlin. SP's are very hardy and I have had mine in clay pots frozen solid for weeks on end without any losses. If when frozen you must not let the sun warm up the top growth until the roots have thawed out. Shade them in this case until thawed. ps I personally never use toilet rolls for sweetpeas as I much prefer to sow in 5" pots but if it works for you then no problem.

I use root trainers for my sweet peas, I find the toilet rolls go all limp and floppy with watering

Check the seeds and if they have rotted off then there is still time to resow Merlin. I have lost about 30% over the winter and they were the wetter ones.

Mine are just fine and I have done nothing to them. I am glad I gave my gift ones away when they were about 2 ins high, so I did not have the responsibility.

Question is, do I sow again now or wait 'till it warms up a bit?

Sweetpea will sort you out Merlin. I sow into JI Seed which does not hold too much moisture. I have only done as SP advised and the system works admirably.

Question is, do I sow again now or wait 'till it warms up a bit? If sowing under cover merlin then you can get on with it any time now. if you want to sow outdoors where the plants are to grow, I would wait until the weather has warmed up the soil a bit, any time from march onwards. Cloches help to warm up the planting area also. Really just the same as any other hardy annual. i would sow in pots or trays using soilless compost at this time of year but not for autumn sowing.
