Driving through a semi rural area yesterday i noticed a very large bird of prey and although i've pored over the images for both birds i'm unsure of what i really saw ! The bird was in a field, sitting on a tree branch, no more than 10' off the ground - definately low down. The trees line a rhine (ditch) and this bird was transfixed on whatever was down in that general area. What captivated me was the sheer size of the bird, i was about 40' away from it and i could clearly see its immense size - length and bulk - it was still huge from that distance away Having studied at the images for the buzzards i see they have a fair amount of lighter, speckley colouring on their chest whereas this bird was definately brown chested with a greyish neck/head area. Given all of this, would a kite come into this geographic area and would they be so 'brave' as to be in a farmers field like that ? I've understood them to be rare birds, so i'd be surprised if it was one but - there was definately no speckled chest, so ...... not sure really what i've seen ! Any thoughts ? Update ! I've just read a piece written by a local fisherman that said a red kite was seen very close to here, so maybe it was. 2nd edit ! I've just read another piece that mentioned a pair of kites being sighted about 5 miles from there now too, so if it was actually a kite it's not as remarkable as i thought !!!

Could well have been a red kite from what you say Louise. Husband sees dozens of them around the M40 motorway when he's driving down that way around Oxford to London. I don't think we have any near us up here but I have seen a couple of them years ago in South Wales when they were just reintroducing them around the Black Mountains.

I don't know enough about birds to comment on whether what you saw was a Kite or not Sue, but I know they are not as rare as they used to be. Where I live (about 35 miles north of London) we have been seeing both Kites and Buzzards over the last 3 years or so. Prior to that there were none of either bird in this area. I've only seen them in flight and buzzards look huge even from some distance away

I'd know a Buzzard with my eyes shut, they're very common here, almost tame! No Kites but we do have a Kestrel which may fit your description.

I don't think it could have been, Merlin, they're a lot smaller and the images show quite a light coloured chest and front.

I'm sure Steve has posted a photo of a red kite. We have both Red kites and Buzzards here, in flight there is no mistaking which is which but explaining the difference would have no meaning unless you knew one or the other well. Both Buzzards and Red kites are no longer that rare and are spreading across the country so it could have been either you saw. That wasn't much help was it?

I've seen lots of red kites round here and also buzzards. Usually flying though I have seen an occasional buzzard perched at the side of the road probably with its eye on roadkill. Have also seen sparrowhawk perched witing for prey but they are quite distinctive. The only time I have seen a red kite perched was on a pylon and that was just prior to it flyinf off.. I was stumped once by a bird which turned out to be one of next door's pullets which had somehow got onto the lower branches of a pear tree. Always difficult to be sure of identification unless you are familiar with them.

Buzzards are very common around here too, the odd one circles over the houses here & when we drive down the motorway you see them perched on the fences watching the traffic or facing the field or soaring overhead, you usually get at least 1 per mile as you head towards Merlin's part of the world!
