Our allotment society has spent hundreds of pounds putting up high heavy metal fences all around the site to keep out vandals and thieves.
This week, the metal theives got in and took all the taps!! I guess they will be taking the fencing any day now!

Scum of the earth, if you caught them at it and gave em a wallop there would only be one person going to court...the only way i can see Cowslip is plastic taps?

That is terrible. There are lead taps all over the place here from the old days before the house was built. They are standpipes. Perhaps I should get them put together and sell them myself before they are stolen.

It could be worth your while Cherry My son recently took some copper piping left over from plumbing work in his house extension to the local scrap merchants and got £90 for it ;D

I expect the committee will be considering it Steve. The annoying thing is that many of the elderly plot holders have difficulty accessing their plots now because the locks on the gates are huge and heavy to manipulate but these yobbos obviously just climb over so it all seems a waste to have had all this expense and aggravation.

Scrap metal theft is very prevalent here in the North East. We caught 2 lads taking the lead flashings from our bow window 1 night a couple of years ago and 1 morning the street woke to find that all the drain covers had been taken overnight. The council replaced them with plastic ones.

One of the sites I had years ago planted blackberries all round the perimeter fence so the only feasible way in was via the gate which was about 8' high with spikes and razor wire at the top.. Not completely insurmountable but not worth the effort to get through in the dark as there was nearly always someone there during daylight hours.

This is dreadful Cowslip...these thefts are happening all over the country ...It would be worth their while planting the prickliest plants possible to keep the b*******s out....its a pity an electric fence wouldn't be allowed

You have my utmost sympathy Cowslip. The Gov are clamping down but 'cash' will always out. In an ideal world you should be legally allowed to dig a 6' hole, then dig a shallow water-filled trench around the booty, then wire it up to the mains. If successful the 6' hole would come in useful. With all the hi-tech stuff around, could you trigger a silent alarm so you nip round and block their exit until the law arive though that may take an hour or two

My other half went to lottie today and came back to say all the taps have been stolen there too. We hadnt had any problems at all and then next doors shed got broken in last week and they stole his rotovator and now the taps are gone, it would seem nothing is safe

It is getting worse now the value of scrap is worth so much. I was waiting at some traffic lights today, after giving the daughter-in-law a lift. There were two horse and carts across the road, the one in front a man was on that one, when we set off the person on the second one was a boy he looked about 8 years old. I ask myself how do they getaway with letting someone of that age be in charge of a horse and cart on one of the busiest roads in the district and why was he not in school.

Too bad about those thefts where you all are. Here they don't bother much with any gardening equipment (rotavators, grass cutters etc) left lying around. What they do take is produce. I remember my neighbor telling me that he woke up one morning to find that all the cucumbers and lettuce he was about to harvest was gone. And he supplies salad vegetables to a local supermarket so that was a big loss for him.
When we had just moved to the farm and were just starting to fix the place, I mean we didn't have any fencing yet we woke up one morning to find the barn had been broken into. Good thing we didn't have any animals in there yet, so nothing was taken. Now even if the fencing isn't that high I guess having a lot of people around, stable hands and such kind of deters anyone from trying to steal anything. And we have a few aggressive billy goats so I guess it scares thieves away.

There's always a Silver Lining, the people who make and sell the taps had to pay the legitimate price for brass, it would cost you more to replace them ;D Seriously though, it's often the feeling of impotence in not being able to prevent these petty but very annoying thefts. Steeling taps must also result in a very wet lottie too. I intend to visit a scrap yard for some angle iron, I wonder if they'll accept cash or ask for a cheque. The Gov is trying to stop cash at these places but they've got their work cut out.

I have been told that it is now a horrible experience going to a scrap yard. The person in charge is behind a grille and there are no women about at all. It is scary.
Jrae. Geese could be useful. Noisy blighters.
