Went to start up my rover 45 yesterday morning. Turned the key and there was a sort of clunky scrunchy noise then nothing. After which when turning the ignition key all it does is go 'Click' At first I thought flat battery but using jumper leads, nothing. Changing battery with a known good one, nothing. I then realised the header tank hose was frozen, had ice in it so I wondered if this would have caused something more serious. I haven't topped up with antifreeze as there as a very small water loss from the radiator so just water in it. Any ideas from the engineers' department would be gratefully received.

It sounds like the solenoid or the starter motor.
If it is the starter motor, it can sometimes be freed by bumping the car in reverse.

Times have changed since we fiddled with engines SP. Rovers are fussy about batteries, they do just go 'click' unless the battery is on good form. I tried to start a rover 75 with jumpers from my Landrover once and it still wouldn't go. How old is the battery.

I'm trying hard not to say starter or ring!! expensive. Always a good idea to check the cheaper options first. ie. I had the same symptoms on my previous car, The Garage put a new solenoid on it and for a while it started but then, same problem. This time I took the barrel out of the ignition and with the help of a bit of Vaseline (often uuseful) I sorted it. Also these probs are often caused by dirt or carbon on terminals. It may be worth cleaning them all and putting a bit of Vaseline on, especially the earth. Good luck.
