I bought two black bamboo plants, very small in 8" pots, and I've promised them to two people who said they would love one ( me being so kind and generous ) Any way I`d kind of like to have one for a pot , could I take a piece before I re pot them ? would it damage the plant ? And what way would I propagate this if it`s ok to do so now?

What I did with the bamboos I have in pots is I washed the soil away and divided it into clumps, each clump must have 2 or 3 culms (the growing stems) and some roots with it.
Then when I replant it in pots I check if the rootball sticks a bit above the compost so the new shoots won't have a hard time pushing out of the soil. I don't know how it goes for smaller ones though. How many culms does each plant have?
Oh and if you want to remove some leaves to help it recover since you cut the rootball apart, take off the older leaves (the lower ones) instead of the newer ones.

I've found my black bamboo is very tough, as long as there was some root and some leaf it grew. I cut the stem(s) down to one third as I read this was what you should do. I did find they did take at least a year before they started to grow new shoots.
