Ive planted out 96 dahlias today between my 'home' plots and my plots at parents house. In the planting hole I added a heaped trowel of Groworganic and another of Erin mp compost, and lightly mixed it in. With any dahlias that are a little tall I broke off bottom pair of leaves and planted with the soil level at the next pair up (I do the same with any dahlias having bottom leaves that are past thier best). I watered each in with 2 pints of water and containing a scoop of Phostrogen Lawn Feed, a scoop of Epsom Salts, 10ml of Maxicrop Bio Stimulant. I then scattered the slug pellets around the dahlias, and placed mothballs around each of them as well. Weather dependant, I will not now water for 12 to 14 days to encourage the dahlias to 'seek out' the water in the ground. Regards, Paul Thats a good idea....I have some plants that have tatty bottom leaves I have slug pellets and mothballs ready and waiting

We put our first three dahlias in last week, they are older plants and seem to be doing well am hoping to get all the others in this week, some are looking quite big now.I am just hoping there is enough room in the four beds otherwise I will have to do another bed quickly for them. Two of our three Kenora Sunset plants we have dont seem to be doing very well so I am not sure they will make it so OH has said if they dont we might just take a trip to Ayletts and see what plants they have, I told him we better get the others in first and see if theres any space lol!

I am aiming for the intermediate championship class at harrogate. Hello There and welcome. I am from the other end of the country in the deep South West. I'll be interested in your growing methods, and even more so on your findings with varieties (I know should be cultivar but I cant help it!) grown. Regards, Kelsae Carla, on its day its a cracker but too inconsistent with top quality. Can fimbriate too in hot weather. I found its one that races and I grew it for several years, planting out plants of it barely say 3 inches high. And still I would need to imply a 'knock back' procedure. My main dahlia is Trelyn Kiwi and grow 24, so thats 1/4 my total. Some others Im growing are Barbarry Pip x12, Oakwood Goldcrest x 6, Weston Buccaneer x 6, and others of 4's and 3's of mini decs, small decs, msc, min-sc, md, ssc etc. I have a dahlia website for information not business called Paul's Dahlia Guide. Look forward to your write ups here. Regards, Paul

My clubs sale (West Cornwall Dahlia Club) is tomorrow, and I am hoping to collect 6 dahlias from my mate, Ted. I'll plant them Monday as I have a day off work anyway. This means my dahlias grown for 2011 (barring any needing replacing, please not as Ive v.few spares although my mini cactus are interchangable) are:
Weston Miss (min sc) x 4 Weston Buccaneer (min c) x 6 Weston Pirate (min c) x 4 Weston Kelpie (min c) x 4 Weston Spanish Dancer (min c) x 1 Weston Sunup (min c) x 1 Trelyn Kiwi (sc) x 24 Ruskin Respectable (ssc) x 4 White Charlie (md) x 4 Oakwood Goldcrest x 6 Barbarry Pip (min d) x 12 Marston Lilac (min d) x 4 Marston Suzanne (min d) x 3 Rossendale Lewis (min d) x 5 Scaur Sundet (sd) x 8 John Patrick's 'Seedling' (sd) x 2 Ruby (sd) x 1 Ruskin Helen (ssc) x 1 Ruskin Limelight (msc) x 2 Ruskin Sensation (msc) x 3 Hillcrest Candy (msc) x 3
Of these the ones Ive grown before (and there are a few new ones here at least to me) and have most experience of are: Trelyn Kiwi, Scaur Sunset, Barbarry Pip, Oakwood Goldcrest, Weston Pirate. The others Ive either only grown for one year previously or not at all.

No way i could cope with growing that many. I grow between 6 and 8 of each variety only....depending on the classes. So for smalls, if it's a vase of 5 and a vase of 3, then i'll grow 8 plants and aim for one bloom per plant being spot on. Some years you just about get them, some years you have a glut.
