Saw these two holes (about the size of a pencil) in the garden today, there is an excavated heap of soil around each one. Anyone know what has come out or gone in?

It could be solitary bees or wasps.

Could be beetle grubs if there's a lot of woody stuff in the soil...

I had these holes a couple of years ago- it was a bit later in the year, though I think WLF could be right about solitary bees/wasps.

Thank you for your replies The hole in Esther's photo looks the same as mine, I'll have a look each time I'm near the area and see if I can spot the culprits ;D

Yes, almost certainly solitary bees or wasps. The commonest being some of the solitary bees. I often come across them at this time of year and try not to cultivate the soil when I find them.

The holes are still there, I thought they might have got filled in after yesterdays heavy downpour but they are OK although no sign of the bees - I will keep looking

I was going to say mining bees as well as I remembered Esther's photos from a while ago, never seen them here though.
