it looks like my Hamamelis Jelena has expired. it behaved erratically and flowered in the autumn with yellow flowers, then struggled to flower in late winter with the orange flowers, the leaf buds formed, but that was as far as it went, now it's just a dead looking shrub. Do you reckon the last 2 winters finally took their toll ?

I take it you have scratched the bark to see if it is green. Some of my shrubs are very, very late because of the weather. You would hardly believe that the Jasminum officinale looks completely dead when these are so hardy, unless you look closely and see that some of the shoots have 1/2" furled leaves. The daphne bholua is behaving like your Hamamelis and the new leaves are only 1/4" long. I gave it a feed of bone meal and it is getting more time. This is because I love it as much as you love your Hamamelis.

yes I've done that Cherry and you can see that although there is some green it is most definately starting to go brown. The other 2 I have are now in full leaf, I'll take a photo later

Grindle, I have noticed that when I can't really tell if it is green wood or brown, it is usually the latter, especially now when it should be bright green as sap starts to rise. I might photograph my poor Daphne bholua 'Jacqueline Postill' too just to keep your Hamamelis company.

That is a shame grindle. Oh well, think of it as an opportunity for a replacement, same or otherwise....

If it has to stay for a while, at least it is getting time to spark up.

What a shame Grindle I hate it when a plant dies in our garden.

What a shame Grindle I hate it when a plant dies in our garden. Just what I was about to say but esther beat me to it. Plants do have a habit of coming and going in a garden so when one is lost I tend to be philosophical about it and start thinking what to replace it with.
