Hi, just discovered a packet of sweet pea seeds, is it now too late to sow them either outdoors direct or in pots?
Thanks.

Why not give it a try, directly into the soil? You have nothing to lose, after all, and you might get some late flowers.

Should get late flowers as Geranium says. Mildew can be a problem later in the season though particularly if hot dry weather but a half strength fungicide early on should help prevent that.

I`m only getting round to planting my sweetpea seed in the open ground. They usually do better than the ones I`ve fussed over in the greenhouse

I'm going to be doing some late planting this year. The first lot came to nothing with all the rain we have had. I'll plant more if and when we get an entire week of sunshine.

Going to start mine off on Sunday. All seeds sown of Sir Jimmy Shand, Millenium, Zillah Harrod will be ones i've saved from the best plants last year for uniformity of colour and vigour. Rest will be from the various colour seedlings. Depending on what germinates I will order extra seeds as back up to start off in December. As an aside, I'm pretty sure that a few of our specialist suppliers get their seed from New Zealand, and vice verca. I know Eagle nurseries have such a scheme so that seeds collected in our season go to New Zealand to be grown, and then seed collected is sent back to sell over here.

Scrumpy, I think we still use a lot of sweet pea seeds from New Zealand.

Yes, they grow it sweet peas for seed on the East Coast - drier and sunnier than here.
One of my plants that did not rot off in winter has buds now, so that is nice.

Mary I wonder if that plant of Sweet Peas will do better. I suppose we will just need to wait.

Two florets are open. A lovely purple one. I can't remember which packets I planted, so there will be surprises along that wall. I haven't had time to plant the gaps yet. So much work on!
Do you people always wait until the last floret is opening before picking, or just until all florets on a spike have coloured up and one or two are open?
