Should have had a few bunches by now, but they are really suffering with bud drop. Some stems that are forming are so weak you can snap them off. And those that are of a reasonable thickness, the buds are useless Think we need a bit of sunshine.

Oh dear Scrumpy. I am sure you must be right. I have never experienced this, but light levels are very poor. I wonder too whether they should be having as much water as they are receiving where you are.

Thats a shame Scrumpy, the weather certainly hasn't helped us gardeners much this year.

Yes, the show is just over 5 weeks away, so nature has a bit of time to adjust itself. Nature never ceases to amaze me . Last year I had not so good plants yet no problems with blooms. This year my plants are a lot better yet all sorts of problems with blooms. And according to the weather forecast, a new deluge is on the way

Well there is some light at the end of the tunnell. Been round them all today and the next lot of flowers look OK. The not so good picture shows the problem. The buds that form are significantly paler than what you expect, as shown by the one on the right. You spot this paleness as soon as they form. The one on the left is nice and green. Soon as you see these pale buds, they have to come off. I let that one grow, it started with 4 buds, down to two, and those will come off before flowering. As i said, finally producing some blooms so in a few weeks time we'll see how good or bad they are likely to be.

Well they were good. Unfortunately, this glorious weather has brought it on again, though not as bad as before, just in time for Wem show. Coupled with the battering they have received from the rain I can honestly say I haven't cut a decent vase of 7 blooms all summer yet my plants look stronger than they have ever done. To have any chance of getting a vase or two for the nationals I need no rain from Tuesday onwards. If by some miracle that happens then my biggest chance of winning will be from Zillah Harrod. They are as good now as they were when they first started flowering. Next best chance would be the mixed vase if the seedlings are in bloom. And of course, I need it to rain heavily everywhere else in the country

I hope they do well for you Scrumpy. It has been an exceptionally bad year and I think there was just too much water for them.

Fingers crossed for you scrumpy, it could be a bad year for all exhibitors of flowers this year, if it carries on like this.

I always found the the best ones to cope with the wet weather were the white flowered ones, particularly white supreme which of course has been superceded now.

Well i've finally worked out why i've not had many spikes yet. Good old bud drop. Usually happens after they've been flowering a little while, not this year. Went through the lot of them and took off all the faulty ones. Looking at the growing point, I can see some proper ones forming. Looks like I'll be lowering them before they even flower. Also noticed on the seven I cut today pollen beetles and thrips. Ridiculously early for them. I reckon it's going to be one of them years.

I've also noticed a huge amount of bees, and i know its a bit early for them too, but im glad im seeing alot as the bee population has been in decline over the last few years because of crop fertilisers killing them off :-(
