When exactly is it a good time do you think to lift spuds ? I have read so many different ideas I`m confused. One place it says when they flower, another when the flowers die, and yet another says cut the helms off and leave for another week in the ground to toughen the skins up. I`m trying to resist the temptation to have a peek as I know when i start digging they will all be up

It is the best way to tell, just did one plant up and see, some earlies are ready now and I wait until they have flowered but usually did them up once ready (not leaving them in the ground to toughen up) as the longer they are in the ground at the allotment the more chance of slugs having a munch, especially this weather ;D

well I went out to check on the spuds and I think I have the start of blight . Only one plant is affected so far and they are only flowering now. I wonder if I removed the one plant would the rest be OK or is it inevitable they will all get it like they do every year

Oh thats a shame Bridie ....I've read that you need to cut off the haulms and dispose of them......not in your compost bin though.......and then lift your potatoes as soon as you can....hope yu can save them. btw.....the lavatera seed you sent me gave me 5 lovely plants....they germinated quite quickly too.......hope to be able to show you a pic later on........thats if the sun shines a bit more...and they grow oon a bit quicker

The offending plant was well rotted at the base . I dug up several healthy ones around it . (had lovely rooster spuds for dinner )
to many spuds left to store, should I leave them to see what happens over the nest few days ? of cut all the helms off now and harvest the spuds over the next week ?
I`m looking forward to see what you get Lou. none of my seeds germinated but I have a few left. The original plant is growing again so I may get more seeds later.

This is the route I would go down.....they may start rotting if yu don't...

The thistles grew right beside the potatoes and they were taller than me. I dug a few Red Duke of York, which were not really ready, but the skins were tough when cooked. I wonder if that is because they are not just ripe yet.
