My cucumbers are really upsetting. They reached 18 ins and looked lovely with tiny cucumbers. However, they suddenly wilted. I wonder if it was the cold nights recently. They have not picked up at all and I am now putting in plants. I must have done something wrong. I think they need misting and indirect sun, while the tomatoes need dry and can take a lot of sun. Does that sound right? They were in a good spot facing east in the greenhouse, but I was not keeping them in humid conditions.

The usual advice from the 'Experts' is not to mix tomatoes and cucumbers in the same g'house due to their differeing requirements. However as most folks don't have an option we tend to grow them in the same g'house. I know I always did and apart from one year the cukes got red spider I never had a problem. Are your cucumbers all female cherry? They tend to need higher temperatures than the standard ones like telegraph. They seem to me to be more prone to disease than tomatoes especially mildew but normally I would damp down the paths in hot weather and give all an occasional spray with water for both toms and cukes. Check for fine webs cherry to make sure its not red spider.

I've grown toms and cu's together in the greenhouse and tunnel without any problem. Cherry... your poor cucumber I wonder if you sowed your seed a bit early? I sowed mine at the end of March and I have 3 plants, the largest of which is only 4/5 inches tall. They were on the hot bench until a week ago. They are now in the polytunnel. You are right, they need plenty of misting....and I suspect, as Steve suggested, they might have red spider mite.....if it has a hold, I doubt your plant will survive ...You might be able to buy replacements from the GC. If you do go down this route....it would be a good idea to place the pot on a dish of gravel with water in...this should improve the humidity.

Thanks all. I could have been too early Lou. That is a good tip, and no, it is not red spider mite. I am having another go with plants. I seem to have got it all wrong, so I will be more careful with misting, etc.

no it is more like red velvet mite Red spider mites are tiny and most people would need a magnifying glass to even see them. They leave a lot of webs and sometimes you can see a small dot (RSM) moving up or down a strand.

I have planted grafted cucumber plants as replacements. Surely they should be better.

The cucumbers have been in for two days and now one of them has leaves which are covered in tiny bullet holes. What could do this?

You are quite right. There is a moz on my cucumbers and you are allowed to laugh. Life is not that serious. I'll bet Steve knows what the problem is. Lou you have red spider mites on the brain and I have not got them. (I think)
