Everyone else is in the same boat with the recent bad weather so you may think your blooms not up to standard but I wish I had a pound for every time I thought my stuff not good enough when it would have been best in show Good luck anyway. I never had a decent crop from Sir Jimmy Shand, some varieties just don't do well for me. Had the same problem with Mrs bernard Jones and then all of a sudden it came good for me. never could explain it. Ah well, thats sweetpeas for you.

Just back from hiding the bad blooms as best i couldarranging them. As I had the minimum 7 of 3 varieties, selecting the best blooms was a doddle And the rest, well, they made up an entry. Sir Jimmy Shand Assorted Millenium Zillah Harrod Of all the years to get my worst sweet peas it had to be this one. As sweetpea says, same for everyone, and everyone was moaning, especially about bud drop. The real shame is for the public, as they miss out on the quality, and looking at the exhibits on display, the quantity. Though it's early yet, hopefully the benches will fill up later. Will start a thread tomorrow with some decent pictures of the show.

What do use to hold the stems Scrumpy? Reeds or oasis? I nearly got arrested for cutting reeds in Richmond Park Have used both in the past but find reeds hold the stems firmer and you can reposition easier if needed. ps at least you managed to stage a few, good going under the circumstances

No silverware this year Managed to get a 1st for Millenium, 2nds for Zillah Harrod and Sir Jimmy Shand, 3rd for the mixed vase. Well the benches didn't fill up either. I would say there were half the entries you would normally get for the Wem show alone, so for the Nationals as well a real disappointment. So many people just couldn't get the blooms because of the poor growing season. I forgot to take my camera but in all honesty, last years pictures I took were much better. Shrewsbury show next. I only enter 2 vases, but after the disappointing standard at Wem, i'll be hoping for something half decent.

Being the Nationals I should feel chuffed that I managed a first prize but I do feel strangely deflated because they weren't as good as I wanted them to be. Always next year
