Moira is back on the Island from Melbourne, and there is a pic of the 3 wee cousins playing and screaming in a water fountain in a very strong wind, which is the edge of the cyclone. You can see the wind whipping up the grass and the girls’ dresses. Luckily they missed the eye of the cyclone and just have the edge. Moira had to wear sandals in the Melbourne rain, because she had no time to shop for formal shoes in Melbourne. Harriet, who is 7, loved the Christmas lights of the city and the Myers window. It is a different world, like a different country. Well it is a 3 hour direct flight.

The rain is bringing in salt water crocodiles into far North Queensland. The lunchtime news showed Ingham which I know well. It is sugar cane country and full of Italian residents with the beautiful Italian delicatessens and cafes linked to the old Italian cane cutting history.

Wow that is scary, Cherry! Glad we don't have to deal with crocodiles here in the UK!

Bit nostalgic. Listened to the boy treble singing Away in a Manger and thought back to when I could sing like that. Days long gone. Church choir and all that and even though my Father was the Choir master, because I had perfect pitch and could reach the notes, I usually sang the solos. Don't ever remember anyone complaining about favouritism. When my voice broke, my singing days were well over.

May disappear for a while. This computer is on its last legs. The on/off button will not work. We have bitten the bullet and bought a new one. Blooming expensive, but that is the things are now. I am not sure whether I am going to be able to set it up without some major help from sons, grandsons, friend, anyone handy. Will do my best.

Hope you are able to get used to your new computer quickly, geumgrower. I got a new one just a year ago &, until yesterday, it had been going very well. Yesterday as I was reading an article when all of a sudden it shut down & the "blue screen of death" appeared! 😲 Then it started up again only to tell me that no HDD had been detected!!! 😲 Without a hard disc drive the computer is a useless box that you can't do anything with! Eventually I got it sorted out but I spent the evening on it! Today it seems to be working as always so I'm not sure what happened but I hope it doesn't happen again!

It has taken all of two frazzled days to get this far. Still a lot of things to sort out. At least I have managed to transfer stuff from the old machine without too much difficulty. The new one is Windows 11 so having to learn that. They do not supply a DVD player with the new machines, fortunately we have an external one so I could use that to upload stuff. A steep learning curve.

I was lucky, ours is Windows 11 but my son jiggled it and made it look as much like our old one as was possible so we didn't have to learn a load of new stuff, good job he knows what he's doing

geumgrower Glad to hear you are making some progress! I got this computer almost exactly a year ago. It took me a couple of weeks to "tame it" but now I've got it well "domesticated"! Until the problem a few days ago it has been working very well. But my favourite Windows was XP, then Win7. I had Win7 on my old computer but I didn't want another machine with it as it had finished the updates cycle & was no longer getting them. So that made the computer more vulnerable to attacks by "crooks".
I installed Win10 on a Win7 laptop but had to fight with it for years. It wasn't a registered version & I'd get a "blue screen of death" very often, sometimes 3 or 4 times in a single afternoon! A few weeks ago I installed Linux OS over the Win10 OS. It's so very different to Windows! I've tried it before on a few occasions but can't get the hang of it! Being a much "lighter" OS than Win10 it shouldn't keep crashing any more. It has struggled with Win10 & it is impossible to get Win11 to install on it. When Win11 came out there was a tool on the updates page that checked your machine for compatibility with Win11. It told me my laptop wasn't good enough to run the new OS. I will just have to keep having a go at it from time to time. One day I might figure things out! As it's not used for anything in particular I'm in no hurry.

sent my felco's off to be serviced last month, they came back yesterday looking like a new pair, so impressed with the work for just over £27 which included return postage, new blade, handle covers and spring, certainly worth it
