We went for a walk down to the 'Old River' at the end of our road this afternoon, it used to be part of the River Irwell course before they built the Ship Canal & is now like a long lake with a little flow through each end. There are houses either side of it, the newer ones higher up & the old ones just over a slightly raised grassed area. This year there are dozens of ducks, one Canada goose & a pair of swans with 2 cygnets along with herons, kingfishers & at least one enormous terrapin! Everyone takes bread (I know it's not really suitable but they love it) to feed to them & we took some. We couldn't see the swans at first but then realised they were knocking on the door of one of the houses for food! One of the babies had gone up the wrong drive with the goose until dad called him round! When I fed them afterwards one baby ran after me not believing it was all gone! ;D Some of the ducks 'Not there, next door son!' 'That's right, round here' 'Bring back that bread!'

I think it would cost me a fortune in bird food if I lived in those houses! ;D The swans are very bossy though, when they want to sit under the trees on the grass the 'dad' runs up & clears all the other ducks etc. out of the way so his family can have the best spot!

Thanks all, the 'dad' is a bit scary, I know they're only trying to protect their young but I always stand well back from him! ;D
