Went for a walk around Lymm Dam today & was surprised to see a great crested grebe sitting on a nest there, it seemed very late in the year but apparently they breed anytime between April & September!

I've seen them nest there before & we do get the odd ones popping up in the region. We did see a pair doing their courtship ritual once when we were driving past a mere & just spotted them from the road. I think I saw a lesser spotted woodpecker on the walk around Lymm Dam too yesterday, we could here tapping on a tree & stood quietly looking up & just caught a glimpse of the little bird as it flew off. It was only about the size of a gold or greenfinch with a red cap & disappeared in a blur. I've never seen one before & looked up the wildlife recorded there & they do have records of a pair at the dam so I'm pretty certain that's what it was!

I showed you a picture of one nesting at Blackleach a few months ago but Sue's is a better picture. There were tree branches in the way when I took it and you couldn't see the bird properly.
