As an amateur astronomer I was saddened to hear of his death today. He has been part of television astronomy for so long now. Sky at night will never be the same. he was also one of Britain's great eccentrics and quite a character. RIP Patrick

This has been the longest running programme - 55 years and Sir Patrick Moore only missed one of them when he had food poisoning.

Local radio just gave the name of the presenter who stood in for Sir Patrick Moore on the one night in 55 years that he was ill. Next time you are in the Dog and Duck or Needles and the pub quiz asks this question, it was Chris Lintott.

It's very sad news, he was a great person! and loved the stars. I like the fact he still said he was an amateur astronomer ;D
