Saw the results last night and it's good to see the flowers now. Well done Scrumpy.

Heavy rain this week has done some damage to the dahlia plot in particular the 'Hillcrest Candy' which have marked up quite badly. Dunvant Show tomorrow but I am unable to get three vases for the championship so will not be attending, nor the West Wales Dahlia Society show on Monday. Quite disappointing as I have 120 plants which were supposedly timed for these shows and onwards. Must try harder next year (or move somewhere warmer loll).

Today at Southport I met Scrumpy for the first time. I saw that he had won some prizes. In front of the stand two men were talking about dahlias and I asked them if either of them knew him . One of them said "He is standing right here beside you ". The pictures I have just shown you are his dahlias. The first one is for nine small decs and he won a trophy for these. I think the varieties are Senzoe Ursula, Winholme Diane and Rycroft Brenda T (hope I have got them right). The second one is for nine small cactus/semi cactus and he won this as well. The varieties are Ruskin Andrea and Ryecroft Zoe which are the varieties that he sent me and which I won with last Saturday at Edenfield and I showed you pictures of on Derek's diary. Congratulations to Scrumpy, on his wins at Southport. He had another 5 firsts besides those pictured on page 32. Plus I know his real name now too.

Been through the dahlia patch this evening trying to find blooms for show on Wednesday. Caned any that I found - not many - so they can be cut tomorrow morning.
Was going to continue securing buds but realised that by the time they bloom there will be no local shows to take them to so have left them alone for now.

Just erected the cover over the "not serious about them plot" Ninety minutes later there was a big cloud burst Counted 28 buds on a row of what was 20 plants (Marston George) Is this a record? The handful of Dikara Superb that are left have produced 2 blooms (ugly fat stalk, and ugly bloom with large petals and no finesse) But Joan Walker is due soon and looks promising

Started cutting some of the flowers I need for the Welsh Dahlia Society national show on Monday. Only cutting the cactus/semi-cactus types as they don't mind being cut early. It was quite a struggle and only managed three 'Oakwood Goldcrest' and seven 'Hillcrest Candy'.
Of the other 100 plants I am not optimistic: 'Trelyn Kiwi' 1 bloom from 24 plants, 'Willo's Violet' 2 from 24 plants, 'Ruskin Andrea' 1 from 12 plants, 'Ryecroft Laura' 2 from 12 plants and 'Lillian Marston' possibly 6 from 24 plants. Not happy with that at all as these were stopped early enough (I thought) to be in full flush by now.
Will take a leaf out of Scrumpy's book next year and plant in lesser numbers but stopping will be for blooms at end of July - so if they run late they might at least catch some shows which tend to be earlier in Wales with only two or three in September and the bulk in August.

Harrogate is a no-no unfortunately, Tel, as I cannot get time off work. Malvern might be okay though depending on staging times.

What a shame for you. Where is the show at?. I've still got loads of Andrea, Brenda T, Mary's jomanda, lots of miniatures still in bloom. Plus a few mediums. Not looked after them since Southport but this show may be a possibility for next year.

Not looked after them since Southport but this show may be a possibility for next year. It's held in Port Talbot, South Wales and is usually on the Bank Holiday Monday - used to be a Sunday but it clashed with Midlands Show. It's usually a good show, though we are getting short of exhibitors from Wales, so it would be great to see some exhibitors from further afield. This year it looks like the weather might be dry for a change, too!!

Markb, you must have a microclimate like mine. I had no blooms for Grey Mare society show, unlike last year when I got best pom exhibit. If I cannot get 3 Vases of three blooms for Chipping show I'm calling it quits! Still ripping plants out of the plot, Heidi now down to 3. Started with about 230 plants altogether!!!! What a waste of effort and time.

Don't give up. As i've said many a time, you don't need 100's of plants. My 134 plants, with the majority 6 of each variety, with the occasional 8, and for mediums 5 of each variety, managed over 60 vases for two separate shows. And I could have done another show easily. And I still reckon with a little effort I could use the same plants for September shows.
