Sir Alf gets to about 3 foot in height before flower buds form. Maybe you didn't stop it early enough? No idea about Hootenanny, but I would guess again it wasn't stopped early enough.

There is a small local show tomorrow, one of the classes is for 5 ball dahlia's. I am going to take this miniature ball seedling, managed to cut 5 from the plant 4 good centres, but one I am hoping it holds until after judging. Why they want 5 I do not know every other class is for 3 dahlia's. Not been for 2 years, so with a bit of luck they may have reduced balls to 3 [/

Same in South Wales, Tel. All the shows up until the end of August are vases of three (with the exception of poms at some shows), but from then on they ask for fives for any class smaller than medium. We don't have that many growers/exhibitors who can stage vases of five and the show organisers can't understand why they don't get as many entries. Also, to add insult to injury, quite a few have stopped having medals to award.
Hope you do well with your seedling tomorrow, Tel. It looks well tidy as we say around here!

I think it spoils the competition because it can only limit the number of people that can find that number of blooms, to people that grow large numbers of plants. I don't, pretty much 1 plant per variety. The other restriction we have at the local show is that it has to be a vase of the same variety. At county we can have a combination so long as they are the correct size / type of dahlia. Don't see why the local show has to be so rigid. It is a local town show, not the Nationals.
Like you already said Mark, puts people off bothering to enter.

Went back to the show this afternoon, forgot the camera and left my phone on charge. The seedling was awarded the bronze medal. So quite pleased with that.

Bronze medal eh, Tel. Well done. They looked good in the vase, too. One for the Leeds Trials next year?

Checked dahlia plots for showable blooms for Ynyswen show. Need three vases different classifications for a championship. After much consideration I realised this was impossible so have decided not to go. Would have meant staging tonight anyway as I am working in morning.

Here's my entry in 1 vase of 8 miniature decs cut today and a few brenda t cut today Seriously, a slight change to your stopping, and growing methods, you'll be able to do the show easily next year. Those brendas are 2nd flush, and Barbarry Pip just hasn't stopped flowering since early August and still more to come. Could get a good 5 and 3 from them. Those have come from only 6 plants of each variety, and they weren't timed for today. Just let them carry on growing from laterals that I left on the plants after cutting blooms for Shrewsbury show.
