A bit of mixed fortunes at the show.Came home with 3 firsts and 2 seconds and best stand of dahlias in show.Won the 3 vases of 5 small or mini with leopold chloe, ruskin myra and oakwood goldcrest, the mini dec with george marston and the med cac with eastwood moonlight which I got the beat stand of dahlias for.Was second in the small decs with brenda t and second in the 3 vases of 5 large or medium with 2 vases of eastwood moonlight and 1 hillcrest candy.Entered the 3 vases of 5 poms with 10 gurtla twilght and 5 minley carol but 1 bloom of the gurtla's went oversize and so I got an NAS.Also got an NAS in the small semi cac with 1 ruskin myra oversize and put a stand of mary's jomanda and jomanda in the mini ball class but got nothing with either.Dissapointed with the poms, speaking with the judge after he said they would have won and that he had tried his best to get the ring to go over the bloom. Was down the garden before going to the show at 6.30 this morning and it had been 2 degrees under the covers and there was ice on top.I can do without that with just 4 days before cutting for harrogate.

I sincerely hope the frosts don't do any damage to anyones blooms for Harrogate. I'm not going (no blooms, I've had 12 vases out of 200+ plants and that's about it! no poms yet!!)

I did really well at my show. I entered the single stem of dahlia with a Downham Royal in the Novice class and got 1st but mine was the only entry in the class. I entered the vase of 5 poms and unsurprisingly enough I didn't get anything. I entered a vase of 3 Downham Royals in the Miniature / Small Ball vase of 3 class.
There was 7 entries and I came 1st (and beat my Dad's) and I won the Miniature / Small cactus / semi cactus class with my Weston Pirates. I think that was a class of 5 but I don't have a good photo of the whole table. (I also got a 1st for my pot of Fuchsia).
Dad said that he was really impressed with the judging, (not because he had done so well) because what often happens is that there is a tendency for the larger sized blooms to win and that even with my staging my Pirates were judged as better than the other dahlias in the class.
In the photos it looks like there was a massive size difference but they weren't it really was just my staging. Even with my single stem of Downham Royal I couldn't get it straight up, even with it's strong straight stem.
I'm going to buy some bikini vases and practice. I know that it is only a local town show but it is very competitive and I am really happy that I've managed to get my Weston Pirates from over size miniatures to clear miniature. I've only got 1 plant and yet I was able to get a vase of 3. I am really lucky that they were ok to use because I really didn't have a 4th good enough to take. Can't believe that I actually won.
I think my Dad is more chuffed with me winning with my Downham Royals than his Silver Medal. He has often said that Downham Royals have a better petal formation than Jomanda and Mary's Jomanda. I am very proud of them. Dad entered a vase of 3 Downham Royals in the same class but in the run up to the show he had already said a few times that my Downham Royals were miles better than his. I am just happy that the judge agreed.

You've had a great first year, moonlight. Regarding staging it is easier to stage in oasis floral foam. If you have any more shows in your area try and get to one at the end and ask for some of the used oasis. That's how I practiced when I first started (and the shows are usually glad to get rid of some of it).
Really like your fuchsia, too. Do you know the name of it?

Thanks for the well dones and Congratulations. I have been very lucky with my 1st year. Your moral support and expert advice and pointers have really helped.
Mark and Scrumpy do you still use Oasis or do you now use Newspaper or something else, now that you know what you are doing?
Mark my fuchsia is called Paula Jane. I am hoping to take a few cuttings next year.

I use oasis when staging, moonlight. It holds the blooms firmer than paper so it is easier to stage the blooms where you want them.
