I don't think I'd buy anything except bulbs from Parker's. I haven't had very good plants from them. You should be able to get a bare-rooted rose from elsewhere at this time of year, which you can plant as long as the ground isn't frozen.
Can't you get just one of the two and get the other one later on - maybe as a gift? Plenty of Nursery stock 'R in B', as it was the 'Rose of the Year' a few years ago.

Going to bed feeling down, found out about someone loosing well over half his dahlias .
I was trying to get Eastwood Star and it was the only place that I have found that sold it. It feels like there has been a death in the family and I am not being melodramatic.
Even my Sarah Raven order of Downham Royal & Happy Halloween, has not cheered me up.

Come on - it's a new day and things will look better in the light of day. Isn't there a substitute? Ask Tel - he'll help!

No Geranium there can't be a substitute The only thing that could cheer me up right now would be if someone could would wave a magic wand and tell me that they still grew: Eastwood Delight Eastwood Cheer Eastwood Star Eastwood Pinky Eastwood Epic Eastwood Style Eastwood Amber Eastwood Peachy Eastwood Chalkie Eastwood Snow

What I do in times of trouble is to count my blessings - and I've had a dreadful year as many members know - so that's my advice - there must be something in your life to make you think it isn't so bad ? Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh, but believe me - there are worse things.

re Parkers catalogue: I had often heard adverse remarks about thir stuff so I kept clear of it BUT I did order a few things in the last year or two and was very pleased with my plants. I will order from them again as and when I feel the need. Sometimes I think that even with the most reputable companies you can get poor quality so I no longer judge on the basis of one bad apple. Of course you can't beat actually going to a nursery and seeing the plants in growth. As for the dahlias moonlight, check this out: apps.rhs.org.uk/rhsplantfinder/plantfinder2.asp?crit=dahlia&genus=Dahlia&page=39Eastwood moonlight ans Star are mentioned. Good luck

Sweetpea, I think that you are right. Negative experiences with plants are particularly difficult because you spend out the money and if your plants are not right, then you can have to wait until the following year but it can happen with any company. If plants arrive in v.poor condition or the wrong varieties and the company does not even acknowledge your complaint it puts us off risking any repeat business. No company names mentioned (except to say that it was not Parkers).
Thank you for the link but it seems that I am a year out on Eastwood Star but you never know... maybe someone might read this and think "Oh, I've got one of those tubers in my greenhouse............." Ditto the other Eastwood varieties listed a few posts ago.

My sister came round today and she has recommended a local Nursery. I hope that I can go either with HH and the girls or go with my sister. Not sure which way HH would rather, option A or B depends on which would end up on me spending less money.

:Hi Moonlight. Have you tried the National Dahlia Collection for Eastwood Star? Hiya Mark, thank you for suggestion we tried that last year but without success, so I'm still searching. Never know maybe a friend of a friend, of a friend, of a friend, of a friend, of a friend......... might have the magic wand. My fingers and toes remain crossed but thank you. After all we have quite a few dahlia nuts here at Garden Friends Can't begin to express how much this means to my family.
