It is HH's birthday today and he had a day off. We went out for a breakfast, bought another snow spade, came home and watched Captain America but couldn't help be distracted by some little visitors in our garden.
Other than Mr. Robin, not sure about his friends names. The blur in the bush is hardly recognisable but it has yellow on it's wings. We have some fat balls on the tree but we bought some wild bird mix and put it outside on what would be our patio and I've checking that there is unfrozen water in the wheelbarrow nb not my purple one . HH thinks that there will be an angry bird mob if I forget to put more food out tomorrow before work.

Poor little things - if we're cold, what must they be?

If you feed the birds regularly Moonlight it doesn't take long for them to find you and visit every day. The blackbirds and robins in my garden know I put food out every day at about 7.30 and they are already sitting in the trees and bushes waiting for my appearance. I even have one bold blackbird who spots me putting on my coat and wellies through the window and sits on the door handle peering through the glass ;D

I am very conscious that time January is zooming rapidly and I have not started my sweetpeas off yet. I was talking to Fairy Pink Wellies that had I wanted to plant the sweet peas tonight. She was disappointed until she thought about it and asked couldn't we wait until summer to plant the sweet peas. The penny clicked and I tried explain that no I didn't mean 'plant' I meant 'sow' and explained the difference but it was as clear as mud. Sweetpea I tried my best.
What she could not understand was why would you want to grow the sweetpeas when we have snow.
Can't sow (sounds weird not to explain 'plant') tomorrow but must do it at the weekend, don't want to be behind before we have even started.
I will explain the dahlias in a bit, just hope that I don't loose this diary entry.

I could not help myself, I looked at the Sarah Raven website. The dahlias have gone down from £4.50 a tuber to £4.05. I've also got my 10% off because I did not checkout my basket, last time.
I am so tempted. I really want that dahlia, it is more than just a dahlia to me.

Got home from work later than I'd hoped, Dad wanted to know how much he owed for the Mr Fothergill's order so I confessed that I had ordered the multicoloured carrots. My Mum still not convinced, lets hope that they a, grow b, are edible and c, that she'll have a taste (even if she has her eyes closed when she tastes it).
Dad said that he was going to order to 2 Weston Pirates. (ie one each Granddaughter). Feel really mean but the dahlias and sweet peas are my babies. I wanted specific varieties because they are linked to my girls but I'm not yet able to let them belong to the girls. I want the girls to get involved with the garden and I want them to have their own containers to plant what they want (subject to cost) that they are in charge of but not my dahlias, please not my dahlias.
Credit where credit is due, Fairy Pink Wellies and I had a lot of fun planting the daffodils together but it was very much her helping me. She was so enthusiastic but I knowing FPW it is not just about the gardening, she has her Daddy's competitive streak. Pink might be her colour but I hope that she has green fingers.
Thinking about it, imagine the shame of their dahlias being better than mine. What if theirs flourish where as mine die an agonising painful death. That would be awful.
I hope that I am not a really bad Mummy but just want to learn to grow dahlias myself, not for my Dad, not for our girls but for me.
Must be brave tiny steps.
