Dad gave me a Clearview Arlene plant so I will be able to grow a Clearview dahlia after all. My Clearview Orcha with it's tiny shoot didn't like being potted up and the shoot turned brown. My Clearview Arlene tuber went bad and although it had some roots Clearview Jenny, hasn't thrown up any shoots at all. I am disappointed but I guess that that is one of those things. I won't bother re-ordering Clearview Jenny but I still want to order Candy Jayne next year. I won't bother trying to get any cuttings I am going to just put it straight into a pot. Maybe I will have more luck that way.
Colarado Classic also from US (freebie from Dad's order) has grown away quite happily. I've got it because Dad didn't want it (when he saw the photo he muttered if it had been one of his it would have gone straight on the compost heap......). I saw a Candy Jayne in real life when I was overseas, and I thought of you. It was lovely! I am excited to see that your first show went so well. Congratulations

I am glad that Candy Jayne looked good close up, Dad thinks that they are very good at taking photos but they have had some really good ones in the past, just not a fab year this time round for us. My fingers are still crossed for next year. They haven't got their catalogue out yet.
In the end I managed to get Clearview Arlene to grow by chopping her up like a carrot and when I got to a bit that hadn't started to rot I dipped it into rooting liquid and it worked. Clearview Jenny and Orcha didn''t make it and poor old Arlene, it's first flower has been munched.
How far along the season are you Mary?

Still too cool for those who lifted in autumn to plant. I had too much work on, and they just had to take their chances in the ground. Most people plant in October here, but the spring feels quite advanced. The soil is warming up.

I want to collect seeds. What are the signs that a dahlia seed head is mature enough to take off the plant? Also both my Dad and Mum can tell if there are lots of seeds formed inside but I don't know how they can tell without opening them up?

I think you could do me a favour by asking your mum and dad how they can tell if there will be any seeds in the pods. I just look for pods that have closed up, wait until they have dried out before opening them up, but I find I open a lot for nothing. Now if I could tell what pods had viable seeds inside that would save me a lot of time, cutting, drying and opening for nothing.

It's a bit like having a massive Christmas present wrapped up but when you open it once you've took out all the tissue paper all you are left with are a couple of single lego pieces.
Maybe I'll do a before and after shot of seed heads. So we can work out which are more likely. Mind you that that is dependent on me having any more (after they could be wrong but I doubt it). It's just that it was months ago when my Dad asked me if I was going to save any seeds..... and when I said I didn't know if I had any. Felt a couple and picked one and opened it up. Others he said could do with a bit longer.
Every now again I ask him if I should pick some of the others, only to be told 'you can leave them a bit longer'. Very frustrating like thinking that Christmas is only a few weeks a way and then realising that it's February.
Mind you as you know we could have 100s of seeds and none germinate but we do.

I know if the seeds are a grey colour there is no point in sowing them, dark brown/black I seem to get a good germination rate if not planted the wrong way up.

I didn't realise that there was a right way up to plant them. Tel, Dad also said that he knows what you mean but there are some varieties that do have lighter seeds. He can't remember which but he said that you could almost tell by the colour which variety it was by the paler colour.

What do people use to store the dahlia seeds after they have dried out?

Mine are stored in Diabetic tester strip air tight bottles with anti moisture sachet.
They are on top of my shelves, a row of little soldiers and is a source of irritation for my husband (sorry) but makes me smile every time I look up at it.
Thought I better squeeze an update in here before Tel gets the thread closed.
Seriously tho, I would like to say a BIG thank you to all the people who have supported me, in my 1st year of growing Dahlias.
I've got my tubers stored and I've got my that some of them survive the winter.
