I got worried yesterday and took the three pots in the lidded propagator out! They've all started sprouting, so I hope they'll carry on now. They haven't got any sign of mould or rotting. I have trays of seedlings in there, which is why the lid has been on. The other small propagator has a lid, but it's too small to fit over the pots. That only takes four pots anyway, so the others are all lined up on the bench or on the floor with no bottom heat. In other years, they have eventually sprouted, but of course this year they'll take ages!

Thats good!!...the problem lies with heated propagators with a temp.control; if you have them too high, and have the vents closed....then water condensation drips onto the tubers/seedlings beow....and thats when the trouble starts. Now that they have started sprouting.....they should romp away ;D

That's exactly what was happening, so I've been lucky I suppose.

I have a lid on my propagator that I use for cuttings all the time to scrumpy,I never usually have any damping off but I have had little this year mainly gurtla twilight .So with light levels been very low I have turned the thermostst down a couple of degrees and it seems to have solved it .All we need now is some of this to speed things up a bit.

I think thats been the problem....high temps and condensation plus poor ventilation.

I wish I'd put the tubers down later than I did as my some of my cuttings have 6 pairs of leaves. I started them off at the start of Feb.

I used to dip my cuttings in a jar of copper fungicide prior to inserting them in the rooting compost. (peat and grit actually) never had any problems with them.

Do you have Trichoderma over there? It is a beneficial fungus that prevents damping off.

So, is it all right to put Dahlias in my propagator as long as the vents are open?

I reckon they should be ok Geranium....but keep an eye on them on very warm days....its the condensation on the lid that causes the problem.....and excessive heat......don't want them cooking in their pots do we
