Okay you great photographers out there. Here is your chance to shine. This is something I have never quite understood so can anyone tell me in VERY simple terms what the difference is between DIGITAL zoom and OPTICAL zoom? Also what would be the reason to use one as opposed to the other?

I'm not sure of the exact technical terms but optical zoom is an actual zooming in and out of the lens as per old SLR' zoom lenses etc, Digital zoom is a digital reproduction of what the zoom would be
so optical is superior to digital, digital is usually an extra setting on the end of the scale like this camera has a 12 x optical zoom and 4 x digital, for quality especially if enlarging then I try to keep within the optical zoom region.

Thank you Steve. I have the instructions on how to change from one to the other but had no idea of why. I think I have much better idea now so will give it a try when the rain stops of course.

I only tend to use optical zoom because I think the digital zoom is only like cropping your photo to get the appearance of being closer & you lose some of the quality of the details.
