can you actually grow regular garlic that you buy in shops to eat and plant it. Or do you need to buy garlic from catalogues / nurseries etc. I don't want to spend money on something that I don't need to.

I have bought a garlic bulb from a well known supermarket and then split it in to cloves and grown them, they did ok, the theory is that the ones that are for sale by UK gardening companies are bred especially for this country and do better in our colder weather whereas the supermarket ones come from warmer countries and so will not do as well here....but yes you can buy one and grow from them successfully

I have grown garlic, also potatoes off the reduced section in Supermarkets, though gardeners are advised to purchase certified seed potatoes.

I usually buy my heads of garlic from a supplier, but i have also grown it from supermarket cloves, it didn't do too well way up here, must have been a warmer climate variety. Not done it with spuds though Tel. When we went to the sale at Castle Fraser i bought some Sarpo spuds which i am keeping cold so i can grow them this year

Fingers crossed for the weather, doubt very much we will be able to go but there is always next week.

There are varieties suitable for spring planting, T&M and others stock them.
