it's full of large chunks of blue lias rock, stones, roots This sounds like most of my garden with concrete blocks added in for good measure I'm glad I don't find any concrete blocks, Grindle. I get very fed up when I hit yet another rock - and it's difficult to dispose of so many stones etc, isn't it. Yesterday afternoon I braved the cold and went out to carry on digging. (Is there a film with that name? ;D) I dug out yet more bindweed and hit a few small-ish roots but nothing I couldn't deal with. Two more buckets of stones, too! I spread and raked in another bag of manure. Just to give you an idea, this is the area I've dug so far. I suppose it's about a third to a half of the whole cleared patch.

quite a big area G, I bet you'll be glad when it's finished. Hopefully this week time will allow a start on a revamp of one border, all but the shrubs need to come out and start again.

I will indeed - and the forecast is for rain from Wednesday onwards, so I'll be out there for the next two days. I must get it finished, as we're collecting the trees on Thursday from Collumpton.
Are you going to save the shrubs or get rid of them?

I'll keep them, it's the perennials that have got in a mess, and I've lost a few through the rain as well

I finished weeding an autumn raspberry bed and tomorrow will prune these to the base and feed. I dug out a pot of redcurrant cuttings which should fruit this year. They had rooted through the base of the pot, but a sneaky giant hogweed has taken root as well, so the pot will need to be cut open. My husband will take on this manly task tomorrow.

Are they the edible sort? I will be growing them this year, but I am holding off the seed sowing until I come back from Scotland. I am going to see my new great grandson next week.

You will need to send us a photo in the spring when the garden starts growing AJ. I remember the photos you put up when you were starting the landscaping. Not as far advanced as I'd like, but will do. Another 5 yrs and should be good by then ;D

I grow 3 plants in a tub outside the greenhouse Cherry they are the edible ones and we usually get a reasonable crop. - not so good last year because of the weather. Enjoy your cuddle with your Great Grandson ;D

Surprise, surprise - I carried on with preparing the area where the pear tree used to be! I dug out yet more stones, and hit a large root, so I dug a hole and OH came to cut it back with his chain saw. I had to sit in the hole and dig round it and along it as far as possible so he could get a longer piece out. I opened the third bag of manure and spread that across the area I'd dug. I suppose it's two-thirds done now. I also rescued a rather pretty variegated Cotoneaster that had got swamped by the Cortaderia and transplanted it up near the fence. There are two more small Deutzias which will need a new position, too, but I need to get all the new shrubs and trees in place first. I found time to plant the Hellebore I got at the NGS lunch last week, and to pot on six Lupin plants. OH cut the main grass as it has been dry this week.
