SueA I started the big clear out of the back garden yesterday by getting rid of a Deutzia scabra and Weigela middendorffiana which were well past their sell by date and too big for the space, digging out the roots took ages but I persevered, the ground was so dry even after overnight rain, not sure yet what will go in the gap, will have to put my thinking cap on the Deutzia root this is the gap now

Nothing in the garden but I did have to clear a little pile of feathers off the lawn - the sparrowhawk had caught & eaten a sparrow, it's taken to hiding in the bushes & leaping out at them! I did make 4 jars of cucumber, apple & onion chutney from the last 2 big cucumbers out of the greenhouse, 4 Jonagold apples off the tree & a tiny onion of mine plus a couple courtesy of Tesco!

How sad about the little sparrow but the hawk has to live too. I think nature is horrible sometimes.

It is sad but as you say that's nature & the sparrowhawk is a meat eater, I do worry that he sees our bird feeders as his dining room table now though. Forgot I was going to put a pic. on of the chutney I made from homegrown produce - only problem is the kitchen still smells of vinegar this morning!

I didn't do anything in the garden yesterday except watering the baskets & the remaining plants in the greenhouse. I've stopped putting food on the ground feeders for the birds as the sparrowhawk caught another little sparrow a couple of days ago - he has taken to hiding in the bushes & leaping out on them like a cat would! There was a neat little circle of feathers on the lawn where he'd plucked & eaten it so I thought if I only fill the hanging feeders & tray on the pole they stand a better chance. The robin isn't very happy about this arrangement though & sits in the buddleia when I put the food out & I put a few mealworms & suet nibbles down & wait while he eats them, he also spent a while hopping around us looking for food when we were sitting on the patio yesterday afternoon as he felt safe there.

I can't do much for a while, there's someone demolishing my lean-too and patio, and all the pots/tubs, table and chairs, kitchen sink (literally - it's one of those old white earthenwear ones we used to call a bosh) that were on the patio and in the lean-too, are now in the garden and there's no room to move !

There is a lot going on there Eli. You will be too busy tidying after this work to do much gardening. Yesterday I split up a big Hemerocallis which still flowered in the summer and made room for the hardy Fuchsia which I grew from a cutting and a Daphne which had its roots running round in a tight circle, so it was looking limp. I hope it will now grow out of its pot shape.

that's sad SueA I know it's nature, but I don't like seeing it Crickey Eli that's a major job, I guess you're going to be busy for quite some time Got a lot of clearing up done, the last of the potatoes were emptied out of the bin, the garlic was disappointingly small, better luck next year emptied all the old compost and put it in the bin ready for the garden in the spring and cut the grass

That's quite a big drop down at the side there Eli, be careful! Are you having a similar structure built in it's place? Nothing again in the garden apart from watering baskets & in the greenhouse.
