Growing Rocket (1st early) and Charlotte (2nd early). No show just yet but the heavy rain and warmer temps should bring them on. Also growing (in 17 litre polybags) Blue belle (maincrop) for coloureds and Casablanca (early) for whites. I reckon Charlotte to be the finest flavoured potato eaten early or fully mature.... Picasso takes some beating for jackets and roasts
Love the dahlia avatar. What variety is it?

It's a small semi cactus, 'Ruskins Myra'. Had a bit of success with it Dianthus. I only grew 5 last year but a lot more this time if all my cuttings take. Heard others keen on Picasso, supposed to give good yields of big potatoes.

Picasso produce a good shaped tuber, which is what you need for even baking.
I'm trying two new varieties to me - Chicago and Abbot, so it'll be interesting to see what they lift like.

First topping up of the Rocket potatoes. Should start to crop them in 6 weeks. It'll be later than I normally get the first taste, as I haven't started four buckets off in the conservatory, this year. Hopefully, that warm spell we had a couple of weeks ago, will have brought them on.

And back to potatoes..........
Planted my first earlies - Rocket - today. Soil warm enough now.
Have 85 seed potatoes to get planted into bags! roofgardener ...... I can't count properly...... I have 105 tubers. I forgot to count the Chicago in egg boxes that I'd found another spot for, in the garage. Not grown them before, so any feedback from anyone who has, would be appreciated.
65 now planted, with just the Picasso and Chicago left to put into growing bags.
The Rocket are peering through and will get their first top up this week.
You growing them for the whole street, or what.

No Tel ... just for me. I try to be self-supplied with them for 6 months. Because I have to bag most of them, I don't get the yields that Dad did in the family garden. He used to grow about seven seed bags that used to have over two dozen in them. He'd get enough for the family to last until after Christmas.
I can't be doing with the washed supermarket ones, that are turning green before you get them home. They get so battered and bruised through the riddlers and washers as well.

Do spuds needs light or could these grow in bags in a shed?

They will grow in bags, but outside, not in the shed KC. I am doing that this year. I have heaps of land, but can't prepare or look after any more.

Cherry is right, KC. The spuds ... once they have grown beyond buds... put out quite a dense canopy of leaves. I think they look rather nice in their own right, actually.
But of course this means that they need light, just like any other plant, to photosynthesise.
They seem to do quite well initially, when you consider that (in my case) they start off at the bottom of a 3' tall bin with only indirect light filtering down. But to do all the later 'heavy lifting' work (producing potatoes underground) I think they need direct sunlight ?

I have 4 bags sitting on the summer seat at the moment, have more to do, probably another 4-5 bags but space is restricted hence asking about the shed. Bang goes that then.
