Did anyone watch that programme about the ant colonies? What an eye opener. How they coped with adversity and finding food etc. The floating rafts of fire ants in the Amazon was quite amazing how they all work together as a group. I think the makers of star trek may have modelled the Borg on an ant colony although they couldn't have known the half of what went on in a real ant colony back then. Seeing a soldier ant sacrifice itself by jumping into the mouth of a praying mantis which allowed the other ants to decapitate it was quite something. Anyway my views on ants are much modified now. no longer just the little pests that undermine the paving slabs and get into the sugar bowl but creatures to be much admired.
