My sister makes up gorgeous hanging baskets and as with everything else I am a complete novice. I love fuchsias not the skinny ones headed or the giant headed ones. One of my sister's favourites were 'non stop' apricot begonias which took ages to get going (she actually thought that the garden centre was having a laugh) but once they did they were glorious. I'm not all that fussed on begonias because to me they often seem to be all foliage for a bit of flower but I am going to have a try. With the naff weather last year she lost hers She does not know this but I'm getting her some more I just hope that they are the ones that she likes.
Anyway I am planning on making some up and I was wondering what other people plant. Has anyone used the hanging baskets with the internal reservoir to help with the watering?
Has anyone tried strawberry hanging baskets?

As your sister likes begonias, she will certainly be pleased with any that you choose. They are all beautiful. I put mine in hanging baskets in the shade. I also use fuchsias. The ones you describe as 'thin' make up for this with flower power. There are lots of flowers. However, it certainly was a bad season last year.
You should look at Esther's garden pictures for ideas. She is a prizewinning gardener.

Also before they were widely available I always placed a saucer in the bottom of the basket prior to filling with compost. Works just fine. The downside being the rocket from Maureen when she found out. re the fuchsias Moonlight, take a look at this site where you can view many different varieties. www.fuchsiamagic.com/fuchsias/fuchsias.htm

I once saw a hanging basket at work made up of only two plants (both Calibrachoa "Million Bells") purple and apricot. Simple but utterly stunning. I have always wanted to emulate it but for some reason never gotten around to it! Purple and apricot always look good together anyway...at least I think so

I have these baskets too Rosie. They are fine but you do need a lot of plants to fill them if you use all the holes.

One of the best hanging basket plants IMHO is bidens ferrulifolia. See pics here: link
