I've kept very quiet about what's been happening just up the road from our village. It's been going on for almost three years, and we've all fought to try to make our lives bearable.
However, this morning, the Secretary of State will announce that the application by EdF to build a third Nuclear Power Station at Hinkley Point is to be allowed.
The only obstacle in their way now is finance. Their partner, Centrica, dropped out a few weeks ago, and talks with China ground to a halt.
We all feel pretty certain that despite saying they wouldn't subsidise Nuclear energy, the Government will do it somehow - and it'll be announced tomorrow during the Budget.
I was asked if I would be interviewed on BBC TV this morning - I have been interviewed on radio several times over the consultation period, but can't face this one, as it's such a sad day.
I wonder how you'd feel if your life was about to be blighted for the next 10 years? A hostel for 600 single men is part of the application - it will overlook our homes. Many people have already sold their homes to EdF and moved away. Sounds a good solution? Not for anyone - EdF's price was well below the market value, but houses here don't sell - I wonder why?
I know the Country needs electricity, but EdF will not listen to our very justifiable concerns, nor have they made any concessions.
I don't suppose the Sec. of State has listened, either - but we can but hope and read the small print!

it was always going to be a certainty, even when I lived up there. Once they make up their minds, no amount of talks or protests are going to stop it. I feel for you, the 2 that are already there are more than enough

You must be devastated, although I doubt anyone would want this to be built near them it seems even worse when it's being inflicted on a small village like yours. There have been rumblings about applications for 'Fracking' on the mossland a mile or two from our house & that worries me, what you're facing would have me tearing my hair out!

I feel I have to be pragmatic about these things though if I was in your shoes geranium I would be a nimby too. The trouble is that anything like that whether it be wind turbines, nuclear power or extra runways for airports people will always be affected and as we all know only too well the voice of the people is rarely listened to.

it was on the news lunch time, but it seems they still have to get funding so with a bit of luck it will take a long time before any work gets started, I must say it's a huge site compared to Hinkley 1&2

Not just Centrica, EdF had talks with China, and they pulled out too - so who is there to invest in this multi-billion pound project? I will lay a bet that the Government will make a deal with EdF on the 'strike price' for electricity, which is a crafty way of subsidising it! Our electricity bills will soar! I ploughed through the Inspectors' report yesterday and they keep saying how badly local people will be affected, and how sympathetic they are - but they didn't actually DO anything to help us! I was fuming watching the local news, as the reporter didn't interview anyone who lives close to the site, so viewers would get the impression that nobody was particularly affected!

Get in touch with the local news station Geranium, Tell them your side of the story. I wish you the best of luck with the campaign.

He lives in a pretty village up in the hills, well away from all this. He has been of no help whatsoever, making promise after promise, none of which have been kept. Rosie, it's too late. Now that the Sec. of State has made the decision, EdF can do whatever they like. We've battled for well over two years and got nowhere - it's only the financial aspects that's stopping the building work.
