Someone told me that you can buy a pocket sized gadget that plays birdsong while showing a pic of the bird. It's not an MP3 player but it's great for checking to see what bird is singing in the tree. Also it will encourage the bird to respond. Do any of you 'theckies' know what it is?

i believe there is a clock available which gives out a different bird song on the hour. Also a tape from RSPB. I think most people can identify the more common birds such as robin, blackbird etc. and that is through familiarity so i suppose that to learn the identity of different birds would mean getting to know them better through observation. Some of the more obvious ways to identify a particular bird would be, its colouring, sound, shape, way it flies and walks/hops etc. Like most things in life, the more experienced you are the easier it becomes.

Steve, there's birds of prey, and there are birds of prey. Couldn't find this one on the RSPB list www.identiflyer.com/#/identiflyerAnother site but looks like I'd need more than one card, too dear anyway

The only trouble with identifying bird calls is that starlings frequently mimic other bird calls as well as other day to day sounds that they hear such as telephones.
