I'd have to change the opening dates too, Lou - they'd be faced with a sea of greenery and very few flowers in early June, wouldn't they!

I shall stick with mixed borders, Lou. I'm not growing anything for exhibition purposes, after all.

Now if our farmer would only sell us a bit of land at the back of the garden - I could have my own dahlia area! ;D

Hello! I am soon to be starting off my Dahlia Tubers for the first time ever! I've only ever planted ready-grown dahlia plants from the GC before. I am growing Honka and Tahoma Moonshot, 3 of each. However, what I really want to grow, are the 'orchid' type dahlias. Alas, I have yet to find any tubers for sale of this kind. Any one know where to buy them?

A great place to but tubers online is Rosecottage nurseries, they sell loads of varieties. Or just type in Giraffe dahlias in your search engine and up should pop some gorgeous orchid type dahlias.,

I'm getting some cuttings of Honka this year, and one of the "orchid" type.....pink giraffe.....ordered from Station House in Cumbria. Haven't seen tubers on offer though.

Clemrose, are you starting them with any bottom heat? I did that after I got advice from Tel, and I have shoots on the ones that went in the propagator! I want early blooms for my open days.

I've only grown a few dahlias. I tend to grow from seed, discarding the tubers or giving them away at the end of the season. ToTo (tuber) 2006 Bishop's Children (seed) 2006 2008 can't remember the name (tuber)....lost it last winter. Can't remember if this is Bishop's Children or a dwarf redskin mixed (seed)...(2008) Sarah's Delight (tuber) 2009 got far too big...gave it to my sister. Pretty tho. Victoriana...from seed (2010) I grow them most years...but haven't found anything I like quite as much as Bishop of Llandaff yet...no pics of that one unfortunately.

Thank you Geranium. I love dahlias but they're usually too big for my garden. I find that the anemone flower type are more 'to scale' in our small space. The Sarah's Delight was so big and blousy it took over, swamping all of the other plants..I like to see lots of variety in my flower beds.
