I'm really pleased, spotted one of our pipistrelle bats last night for the first time this year. I've been going out to the back door every night recently just after sundown & watching for them & one flew past looking as though it was on it's way back to the roost. The most I've seen here is two together but I'm sure there must be more, I was worried as I don't know where they roost but lots of the older houses around have had new roofs, fascias & guttering & lots of the large trees have been cut down so I thought they may have moved elsewhere.

Hi Sue, not seen any so far this year. Not too many insects on the wing either so you were lucky to spot yours. We would often see them silhouetted against the cler sky in the gap between the trees. Hoping they return this year.

Oh, how lovely! We are officially 'batty' here, as we have bats in our loft. I can't remember what sort they are - OH sent off some of their droppings and we had them ID'd but that was several years ago. I hope they stay where they are to keep warm this weekend, though.

We used to have pipistrelle bats here when we moved in 25 years ago, I think they lived in next door's roof, but when the house changed ownership and the new people made lots of structural changes the bats disappeared, so I think they must have been disturbed. I never see any now which is a shame.

I love bats, we've been a few times to Chester Zoo where you can walk through a building where they are free flying all around you & it's fascinating. I'm not sure I'd like them in my loft though as it's full of all the clutter we've accumulated over the years & I wouldn't fancy bat 'guano' all over it. ;D You're not supposed to tamper with bat roosts/nests though are you but I'm sure lots of builders/houseowners probably 'accidentally' block them out etc.

No, it's illegal to disturb bats! I don't mind them being up in the loft - we don't get to see them there, as they seem to live in the part of the loft that's almost blocked off by a wall. Our loft is fascinating - tree trunks instead of beams, and original stone work at odd angles.

That sounds great Geranium, you could have all sorts of creatures living up there that you don't know about! I forgot to say that the other night when I was looking out for the bats there was a bumblebee flying around in the near dark at 9.10pm checking out the flowers!

I haven't seen ours yet. I do hope we haven't got any other critters living in the loft, Sue! I'm not good on ladders, and I only saw the inside of the loft for the first time a few weeks ago - I plucked up my courage and OH came behind me to support me. It was absolutely fascinating up there - but I didn't see a bat.

They were probably hiding behind a rafter Geranium! I saw two bats together over the garden last night, usually it's only one but one of them did just fly over while the other didi a few circuits of the trees & shrubs.
