I'm particularly pleased with this screen capture from the HD video function on my mobile phone... A Queen wasp was scraping wood from the bench mum was sitting on in their garden whilst we were all having afternoon coffee so I decided to video them (video to follow). I screen captured this still from it where another flew in and literally knocked into her to try and move her on. She just kept at it. Obviously a good spot!

What a great pic steveN Quite photogenic in theier striped shirts as well as useful. Moonlight, wasps are one of the most beneficial insects in the garden. They bump off more greenfly, caterpillars and other garden pests than do ladybirds and bluetits put together. If you don't bother them they don't usually bother you until they start dying off in autumn which is when they no longer have work to do and become a bit of a pest themselves. Only exception is for people with a bad reaction to being stung so they would be better keeping clear of them. I have had nests in my shed many times and no problems with sharing.
