Looks like a slow worm to me, Moonlight.

very often a slowworm will shed its tail when under attack. The tail carries on wriggling while the lizard makes it's escape and grows another tail. The pic (or my eyes) is a little blurred and the other thing I thought it might be is (was) the larva of an elephant hawk moth. The are quite large and appear rather threatening although harmless.

That is a shame. Such good garden friends as well! Springwatch showcased some baby ones in a garden tonight too.

We get them 'nesting' in our compost bin. One slithered across the path in front of me yesterday.

You all lucky to get them, we don't have them this far up the country. Poor wee thing

This little fella was in the g'house and covered in ants so I rescued it and after taking pic put in a safer place. It is only about 3-4" long and still a youngster. It is in a flower bucket sothat explains the pic.

That does look tiny Sweetpea! Ants will have a go at anything won't they, I saw a looper caterpillar making a run across the path from a gang of ants trying to attack it last week.

I do worry about the effects of gardening on animals like slow worms and newts. We found newts in our garden when they were doing the shed and clearing the brambles etc. at the bottom of our garden. Round here so many people have got rid of their front gardens and turned them into driveways or house already had when we bought it but it was the ability to park that was one of the factors that made us want to buy it. We still have a bit of garden but it isn't much.

My son came in and reported finding an adult slowworm in the same condition as yours ML dead and with tail missing. I think it had been attacked by some predator and shed its tail though I can't be certain. I am very careful when using strimmer or lawnmower as I know they are around.
